Container #37 Us and the Night screening
Our next screening is Audrey Lam's debut feature accompanied by Luke Fowler's UQ-set For Dan...
Hello. Thank you once again for joining us.
Saturday’s Screening:
Us and the Night, Audrey Lam, 2024, 67m
7pm, 19 March, at New Farm Cinemas
Night after night, two travellers Umi (Umi Ishihara) and Xiao (Xiao Deng) cross paths at a university library (UQ’s original Duhig library). The library’s symmetry, rhythms and recurrences form a fantastic geography for their stories and adventures.
This screening is preceded by Luke Fowler’s For Dan (12m, 2021) also, in this case partially, filmed at the University of Queensland and grounded in the relationship between the artist’s late father and his closest friend, radical university lecturer Dan O’Neill.
“The film is constantly delightful as it plays with language and image”
The Kinetoscope
This screening is presented by Us and the Night director Audrey Lam. Unrated 15+
Note that that this Container screening is a ticketed event taking place at New Farm Cinemas, not our usual EPT haunt. This is a ticketed screening and tickets can be found here.
Additional Reading (for those who have the time and curiosity):
On the Adelaide premiere of Audrey Lam’s film, the ABC put together a thoughtful profile on Audrey Lam, her use of 16mm and her history with the UQ library where Us and the Night was shot and it can be found here.
For Dan, Luke Fowler, 2021, 12m
For Dan (above) explores an intense period of correspondence between the artist’s late father and his closest friend, radical university lecturer Dan O’Neill. Filmed across UQ and an eco-community in the Sunshine Coast hinterlands , the film impressionistically documents both the friendship between these two young men and sketches a partial political history of Australia in the early 1960s.
Thank you. We look forward to catching you next Saturday for Us and the Night and we promise we’ll be back soon after this screening. A quick shoutout to Ben Rivers whose latest film Mare’s Nest (above) will shortly debut at this year’s Locarno Film Festival.
